PCS to San Diego: 5 Things Every Military Family Should Know Before You Move
Got orders to San Diego? Congratulations — and take a breath. If you've never been here before, it can feel like a lot to figure out at once: where to live, what things actually cost, how school enrollment works, what your BAH will really get you. Here are five things I wish every family knew before they landed, not after.
1. Your BAH Will Stretch Further Inland Than You Think
San Diego has some of the highest BAH rates in the country for a reason — but where you look matters more than the number on your LES. In most inland, family-friendly neighborhoods, BAH comfortably covers rent for a solid three-bedroom home. It gets tight fast in the most desirable coastal zip codes, especially for junior enlisted families or anyone needing a larger home. The move most military families make here: live 15-25 minutes inland, and treat the beach as a weekend destination instead of a home address.
2. The Interstate Compact Protects Your Kids' School Transition — Use It
If you have school-age kids, there's a protection almost nobody explains clearly: the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children. It's adopted by all 50 states and covers things like enrollment even with incomplete paperwork, fair grade placement, extracurricular eligibility for mid-year arrivals, and flexible graduation requirements. If a school ever pushes back on any of this, you can reference the Compact by name — and every installation has a School Liaison Officer whose job is to help resolve exactly these issues.
3. On-Base Isn't Always the "Easy" Choice — Know the Real Trade-Off
On-base housing means zero move-in costs and instant community, but waitlists are real and you don't get to pick your exact unit. Off-base gives you full choice of neighborhood and school district, but you're managing a lease, a deposit, and San Diego's fast-moving rental market yourself. Neither is objectively better — it depends on whether your family values certainty and community, or choice and control.
4. Not All "Military Neighborhoods" Are Created Equal
Chula Vista, Mira Mesa, Santee, Oceanside, Rancho Bernardo — you'll hear all of these thrown around as "military-friendly," and they are, but they're not interchangeable. Commute time to your specific installation, school quality, and price all shift significantly from one to the next. A 20-minute difference in commute or a jump from an average school district to a highly-rated one can completely change how a neighborhood feels day to day — so it's worth understanding what you're actually trading off before you sign anything.
5. Base MWR Is the Most Underused Benefit You Have
Every installation runs a Morale, Welfare and Recreation office offering discounted gyms, pools, outdoor gear rental — kayaks, camping equipment, even RVs at some bases — plus discounted tickets to SeaWorld, LEGOLAND, and Disneyland. Most incoming families don't check MWR until months in, after they've already paid full price for things MWR would've covered. Make it one of your first stops.
